Frigiliana is a village in the interior: it lies at an altitude of around 320 metres, in the Sierra de Almijara, overlooking the valley of the River Higuerón, and it doesn’t have its own beach. If you’re looking for somewhere nearby to go for a swim, the coast is just a few kilometres away: the nearest beaches are in Nerja, about 6 km away, and stretch towards Maro and La Herradura, which are in the province of Granada.
In less than 15 minutes by car, you can get from the old town to the beach. There are four convenient options: Burriana and Maro in Nerja, Cala del Cañuelo and La Herradura beach. No. Frigiliana is a municipality in the Axarquía region, situated inland and with no coastline of its own. It is almost 60 km from Málaga city and about 97 km from Granada, and its appeal lies in its historic centre of Moorish origin, its cobbled streets and the views of the valley and the Mediterranean from its viewpoints – not in swimming. What it does offer is proximity to the sea. The municipality borders Nerja, and from there stretches a stretch of coastline featuring sandy beaches, pebbly coves and sheltered cliffs. That is why most people who spend a few days in Frigiliana combine mornings in the village with afternoons on the beach along the coast of Nerja and Maro.
These are the four beaches we’d most recommend, based on their proximity and what each one has to offer. The first two are in Nerja; if you’re planning to spend the day there, you might find the guide at what to see in Nerja.
Burriana is Nerja’s main beach and the best choice for a full day out. It stretches for around 800 metres of golden sand and features a promenade, beach bars, sun lounger hire and water sports such as snorkelling, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. It is about 8 km from Frigiliana by road.
Thanks to its size, facilities and moderate waves, it’s the most convenient choice if you’re travelling with children or want to have a meal by the sea. It gets busy in high season, so it’s best to arrive early to find a parking space. And if you fancy a change of beach, very close to the Balcony of Europe there are the beaches of Carabeo y Carabeíllo, more secluded and just a short walk from the centre of Nerja.

About 11 km from Frigiliana, next to the hamlet of Maro, lies this cove of pebbles and coarse sand, framed by cliffs. The water is crystal-clear and the area forms part of the the Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs nature reserve, which limits development and ensures the area is well maintained.
To get there, you have to walk down from the car park, and there’s a small beach bar during the high season. It’s a good starting point for kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding around the neighbouring coves, some of which are only accessible from the sea.
Within the same protected area, almost on the border with Granada, lies Cala del Cañuelo, one of the most unspoilt coves in the area. It has a mix of sand and pebbles, clear waters and a couple of beach bars. In summer, access by private vehicle is usually restricted and there is a shuttle bus from the road, so it’s a good idea to check before you go.
It is about 14 km from Frigiliana. As it is not very crowded and has a beautiful seabed, it is one of the best spots on the coast for snorkelling.
Located in the province of Granada, some 25 km from Frigiliana, La Herradura is a wide, crescent-shaped bay stretching for almost 2 km, with pebbles and dark sand. It is sheltered between the headlands of Punta de la Mona and Cerro Gordo, which ensures calm waters almost all year round.
It is well known for diving and water sports, with several activity centres. It has a seafront promenade, restaurants and car parks, and is a good option if you want to get a little further away from the centre of Nerja.
The quickest way is by car. From Frigiliana, take the A-7207 down to Nerja – a journey of around 10–15 minutes – and from Nerja, join the N-340 and the A-7 motorway towards Maro, El Cañuelo and La Herradura.

If you don’t have a car, the alternative is the regular bus service between Frigiliana and Nerja, and from Nerja station, you can walk or take a taxi to Burriana. For Maro, El Cañuelo and La Herradura, public transport is more limited, so having your own car is still the most practical option.
If a day at the beach isn’t quite enough for you, Frigiliana has the sea on one side and the mountains on the other. The village is situated in the foothills of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park, designated a nature reserve in 1999, which encompasses a vast expanse of mountains, gorges and ravines straddling the provinces of Málaga and Granada, and boasts a remarkable wealth of flora and fauna.
The park boasts an extensive network of footpaths that wind through pine forests, steep gorges and viewpoints offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean. The most popular route from Frigiliana is the trail to Pico del Cielo, which is quite challenging and offers one of the best panoramic views along the entire coast. And within the park itself is La Maroma, the highest peak in the province of Málaga at 2,069 metres, the classic ascent of which begins at the El Robledal leisure area, on the Canillas de Aceituno side of the mountain.

In summer, access by private car to Cala del Cañuelo is usually restricted, and a shuttle bus runs from the main road. Outside the high season, you can drive to the car park and walk down from there. It is advisable to check the access conditions before you go, as they vary depending on the time of year.
