Do I need a passport to enter Gibraltar?

It depends on your nationality, but for most visitors the answer is no. If you are a Spanish national or a national of any country within the European Economic Area (EEA), you do not need a passport: your valid National Identity Card (DNI) is sufficient. If you are a national of a country outside the EEA, you do need a passport or another recognised travel document, and in some cases a visa as well.

And there’s an important new feature that completely changes the way you cross: Since 15 July 2026, there have been no border controls at the border crossing between La Línea de la Concepción and Gibraltar. On 14 July, the European Union and the United Kingdom signed the agreement in Brussels that brings the final chapter of Brexit to a close, and the following day the Verja ceased to function as a checkpoint. This means that there is no longer any need to queue or go through a counter to enter or leave by road.

What documents do you need to enter Gibraltar?

Although there are no longer routine checks at the land crossing, you still need to carry a valid identity document with you. Which one you need depends on your nationality, and also on whether you are entering by road or arriving via the port or airport in Gibraltar, where checks are still in place.

If you are a Spanish or EU citizen

Nationals of countries within the European Economic Area, including Spain, may enter Gibraltar with their National Identity Card or a valid passport. Under the new arrangements, Spanish nationals cross the land border by presenting their National Identity Card when requested, without having their passport stamped, in the same way that Gibraltar residents do so with their residence card when entering Spain. No visa or prior formalities are required.

Simply check that your document has not expired before travelling. In the case of minors travelling with their parents, a valid national identity card is also acceptable; if the minor is travelling alone or with people who are not their parents, it is advisable to find out about any travel authorisation that the Spanish authorities may require.

If you are a foreign national

Citizens of countries outside the European Economic Area require a passport or another recognised travel document. In addition, nationals of certain countries and stateless persons require a Gibraltar visa, which is separate from the Schengen visa.

The 2026 agreement includes new provisions on visas and permits, so if you are a national of a country outside the EEA, it is best to check the current requirements before travelling in the Gibraltar Government’s passports and nationality page and with the Spanish authorities. Do you need a visa to visit Gibraltar?

What changed at the border on 15 July 2026

On 14 July 2026, the European Union and the United Kingdom signed the agreement on Gibraltar in Brussels, in the presence of the Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Chief Minister of Gibraltar. The following day, 15 July, the measures abolishing border controls came into force, and on that very day people crossed the border without them for the first time.

These are the changes that affect visitors:

• Border controls at La Línea are being phased out, including the fence that for decades marked the physical border.
• Checks are still in place at Gibraltar’s port and airport, with a dual system managed jointly by the authorities of the European Union and the United Kingdom. If you arrive on the Rock by plane or boat, there are checks in place.
• The Schengen Area, the single market and the customs union are preserved: the agreement removes barriers without altering that framework.
• Checks on goods are also being phased out between Spain and Gibraltar, with enhanced customs cooperation.
• Gibraltar is to introduce an indirect tax equivalent to VAT, which starts with a 15% code and gradually aligns with the European system. It’s a change to bear in mind if you’re out shopping.

An important point to note: the measures have been in force since 15 July, but the agreement still needs to be ratified by the European Parliament – likely in December – and by the UK Parliament before it can come fully into force. We therefore recommend checking official sources (the Government of Gibraltar’s website, visitgibraltar.gi and guidance from the Spanish authorities) before travelling to confirm how the border crossing is operating on the date of your visit.

It is also worth noting that the agreement does not alter the legal position of either party with regard to sovereignty: it is a framework for cooperation on the movement of people and goods, taxation and the rights of cross-border workers.

Tips for crossing over to Gibraltar

Now that there are no longer any routine checks at the border, crossing is easier than ever. Even so, these recommendations are still useful:

• Please bring your valid ID with you. Just because there are no routine checks at land border crossings does not mean you can travel without identification: your national identity card or passport is still required and may be asked for at any time, and is compulsory if you enter via a port or airport.
• Leave your car in La Línea. Parking in Gibraltar is difficult and expensive; the most practical option is still to leave your car on the Spanish side and walk across.
• It has the airport runway. Immediately after the pass, the road crosses the runway at Gibraltar Airport: when there is a flight, a barrier stops traffic until the aeroplane takes off or lands.
• It also registers minors. Every member of the family, including children, must carry their own valid identity document.
• If you’re going shopping, find out about the new tax. The gradual alignment of tax rates may affect the prices of some products compared with previous years.
