Andalusia is home to filming locations for *Game of Thrones* and *House of the Dragon* across four provinces: Seville, Córdoba, Almería and Granada. Dorne, Meereen, Highgarden, Volantis, the Dragonpit and even Pentos were filmed here.
They all come with the specific scene and the season, plus the practical details: which ones you can visit, what their opening hours are, and which ones require a separate trip.
The province with the greatest representation on the route: four locations.
It was the Water Gardens, home to the Martell House, in the Series 5. And the production team recognised just how good a fit she was: she slotted in so well that they hardly needed any digital effects.
The exact locations:
The medieval shipyards he commissioned to be built Alfonso X in the 13th century played the part of cellars where the skulls of ancient dragons are kept.
The Scene, Series 7: Qyburn shows Cersei the giant crossbow designed to slay Daenerys’s dragons, with Balerion’s skull behind it. They reappear in the final stretch of the Series 8, in a scene between Cersei and Jaime.

It was filmed here one of the most expensive scenes in the series: the Daznak Pit, the Meereen arena, in the Series 5. This is the moment when the Sons of the Harpy attack Daenerys and She flies for the first time on Drogon’s back.
And there’s a prize for the fan: on Osuna Museum has a room dedicated to the series, «Ice and Fire», featuring costumes, photographs and footage from the shoot.

Córdoba’s most photographed bridge became the Long Bridge of Volantis, on the River Rhoyne, in the Series 5. That’s where Tyrion Lannister enters the city accompanied by Varys.

This castle was built on two different sites, and it’s worth knowing this because usually only one is mentioned:
The Scene, Series 7: the death of Olenna Tyrell, who drinks the cup of poisoned wine that Jaime offers her and, with nothing left to lose, confesses to him that it was she who killed Joffrey at the Purple Wedding.
And it is the most accessible of the whole route. With nearly 14,000 reviews and a rating of 4.8, is one of the best-preserved castles in Spain:
Of Umayyad origin, from the the year 760, built on the site of an earlier Roman fort. It was restored between 1901 and 1936 by the 12th Earl of Torralba. More at the Game of Thrones filming locations in Córdoba.
The province that has been filming movies for decades, and which provided the most challenging outdoor locations here.
In the midst of Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, this 19th-century defensive tower, situated on a hill by the sea, was used for the exterior scenes of Meereen: that’s where Drogon lands.
The the gypsum quarries at Sorbas, in the semi-desert interior, made the gates of Meereen.
To visit it: It can be reached on foot from the area around Agua Amarga and Las Negras, in a protected area. Plan your time, take water with you and bear in mind that There are no services on the final section.
One of the largest Muslim strongholds in Spain, A National Historic Monument since 1931, also represented the The Water Gardens of Dorne, just like the Alcázar in Seville.
The Scene, Series 6: this is where Ellaria Arena kills Doran Martell.
It is the easiest place to visit in Almería, as it is in the capital itself and can be combined with a visit to the historic centre on the same day.
The House of the Dragon takes place almost two centuries earlier Game of Thrones, at the height of the Targaryen dynasty, when dragons were still plentiful. And its only Andalusian filming location is right here.
What it represents: the castle of Pentos, one of the Free Cities on the other side of the Narrow Sea, in the Episode 6 of the first series. It was filmed in October 2021, and for the occasion, paintings and tapestries were hung inside.
The scenes: the king Viserys out for a walk with Laena Velaryon on location, and a conversation between Laena and her daughter Rhaena in a room with a fireplace.
The castle itself is well worth the trip. Built between 1509 and 1512 commissioned by Cardinal Mendoza’s son, it is one of the first Italian Renaissance castles to be built outside Italy and the first documented work by Italian artists in Spain. Listed as a Site of Cultural Interest since 1922.
Important notice: is private property and its visiting arrangements are very restricted, with no regular opening hours. Check that it’s open before you set off, because it is an hour and a half’s drive from the city of Granada, in the Guadix region.

In Seville, the Real Alcázar was Dorne, the Reales Atarazanas were the crypts of the Red Keep, Italica was the Well of Dragons, and the Osuna bullring was the Daznak Pit in Meereen. In Córdoba, the Roman Bridge served as the Long Bridge of Volantis, whilst Almodóvar del Río Castle stood in for Highgarden and Casterly Rock. In Almería, the Mesa Roldán Tower and the Sorbas quarries stood in for Meereen, whilst the Alcazaba of Almería stood in for Dorne.
At La Calahorra Castle, in the Guadix region, in the province of Granada. It stands in for Pentos Castle, one of the Free Cities, in episode 6 of the first series. Scenes featuring King Viserys’s walk with Laena Velaryon and a conversation between Laena and her daughter Rhaena were filmed there. Filming took place in October 2021.
Almodóvar del Río Castle, in Córdoba. It is open every day; admission costs 11 euros and there are signs and references to the film shoot scattered throughout the grounds, as well as dramatised guided tours. There is free parking at the bottom and an optional shuttle bus for 2 euros, which saves you from having to walk uphill. The Real Alcázar in Seville is the most famous, but it’s best to book in advance.
There are some restrictions. It is privately owned and visiting hours are very limited, with no regular opening times, so it is advisable to check whether it is open before setting off. It is situated in the Guadix region, an hour and a half from the city of Granada in the direction of Almería, so it makes sense to combine a visit with a trip to that province.
The Daznak Pit, the Meereen fighting pit, in series 5. It is one of the most expensive sequences in the series: the attack by the Sons of the Harpy on Daenerys and the moment when she flies for the first time on the back of Drogon. The Osuna Museum also has a room dedicated to the series, called «Ice and Fire», featuring costumes and props from the shoot.
Two. The fortress served as Highgarden, the seat of House Tyrell, and its dungeons as Casterly Rock, that of the Lannisters. Both appear in series 7, and it was there that Olenna Tyrell’s death was filmed; after drinking the poisoned wine, she confesses to Jaime Lannister that it was she who killed Joffrey at the Purple Wedding.
